Clio vs MyCase: how the plans compare

Two of the best known names in small firm practice management, compared line by line from what each company publishes about its own plans.

If you are choosing between Clio and MyCase, you are choosing between two mature products that cover the same core work: matters, contacts, calendars, time, invoices, trust and a client portal. The differences sit in how each one splits its features across plans and what it sells separately. This page sets the two side by side from their own pricing pages, then says where Coil, which makes this site, fits for a small firm.

Clio at a glance

From Clio’s pricing page, as listed on October 28, 2026.

  • Plans and price. Starter, Core, Signature and Elite. Starter shows “Starting at $49/user”, and the FAQ says plans start at $49 USD per user per month, without saying whether that is billed monthly or annually. The other three plans are priced by quote, so see their pricing page.
  • Trial. Seven days, no credit card.
  • Every plan. Matters, calendaring, tasks, unlimited storage, trust accounting, built-in accounting with trust and operating reconciliation, invoicing, payment plans and the iOS and Android app.
  • Tiered. Custom fields, conflict checks, the client portal and AI features start at Core. E-signature is 3 a firm on Starter, 15 on Core and unlimited from Signature. Split billing and multi-currency billing start at Signature.
  • Separate. Clio Grow, the intake and CRM product, is in Elite and an add-on for Core and Signature. Clio Work and Clio for Personal Injury are add-ons. No add-on price is shown.

MyCase at a glance

From MyCase’s pricing page, as listed on October 28, 2026.

  • Trial. Ten days, no credit card.
  • Every plan. Case and contact management, calendaring, time and expenses, invoices, trust ledger and reconciliation, trust balances by case, multiple bank accounts, LawPay online payments and customizable reporting. The client portal is marked limited on Basic.

Where Clio may suit you better

Clio puts its accounting, trust and operating reconciliation and its phone app on every plan, so a firm that wants its books inside the practice software without an add-on may lean that way. Clio also lists e-filing in Texas and Georgia, paid per filing, and court rules for 3 or 10 jurisdictions depending on plan.

Where MyCase may suit you better

MyCase publishes every price, monthly and annual, so you can work out the cost before talking to anyone. Intake forms, the legal CRM and unlimited e-signature all arrive together on Pro, where Clio spreads intake into a separate product. MyCase also lists an MCP connector for Claude on every plan, and a longer trial.

Where Coil fits

Coil is hosted practice management for solo and small US firms, and it is in beta. It is free during the beta, and beta firms keep founding pricing when paid plans start. No paid price has been set. Its stated rule is one price for every tool, with no seats or tiers.

What Coil has today: trust accounting with three-way reconciliation and a refusal to overdraw any client, intake with a mandatory conflict check, e-signature, a client portal, time tracking, documents, calendar and deadline chains, reports, exports in QuickBooks layouts and LEDES 1998B, personal injury and criminal defense modules, and an API and MCP connection for your own AI.

What it does not have: invoicing and online payments are in testing, not available. There are no mobile apps, no live QuickBooks sync, no e-filing, and the court rule sets are generic starters. Coil’s own AI assistant is not available yet either.

Coil
Price Free during the beta; founding pricing kept
Trust accounting Available now
Intake, e-signature, portal Available now, all included
Invoicing and payments In testing
Mobile apps None
Data export Full firm export at any time, opens without Coil

So Coil fits a firm that wants intake, signatures, the portal and trust in one product without paying per seat for them, and that can wait for invoicing or bill elsewhere for now. A firm that needs billing, a phone app or e-filing this month is better served by Clio or MyCase today.

Switching

Coil’s importer was built for both Clio and MyCase exports. Contacts, matters, time and expenses, bills with their balances, the trust ledger, tasks, calendar entries and documents come in one file at a time, each with a preview and a column mapper. Trust rows that would take a client negative are refused and listed. The full firm export goes the other way at any time: the database file, CSVs, your documents and every PDF Coil made.

Whichever you pick, read the current pricing page before you sign, since plans change.

Questions

Which is cheaper, Clio or MyCase?

It depends on the plan, and only part of it can be compared from public pages. On October 28, 2026, Clio listed a starting price of $49 USD per user per month and gave other plans by quote. MyCase listed Basic at $50, Pro at $100 and Advanced at $130 per user per month billed annually, or $60, $120 and $150 billed monthly.

Do Clio and MyCase both include trust accounting?

Yes. Both pricing pages list trust accounting on every plan. Clio also includes its built-in accounting, with trust and operating reconciliation, on every plan. MyCase sells MyCase Accounting as an add-on at $39 per user per month on Pro and Advanced.

Which one has a longer free trial?

MyCase lists a 10-day free trial and Clio lists a 7-day free trial. Neither asks for a credit card, according to their pricing pages.

Can I import from Clio or MyCase into Coil?

Yes. Coil's importer takes exports from both. You preview and map each file, trust rows that would overdraw a client are refused and listed, and failed rows come back in a file that explains each one.
