What this covers
This policy covers the coil.legal website and the install keys issued from it. It does not cover the Coil software itself once you are running it. When you self-host Coil, your firm is the controller of everything in it and none of that data reaches us at all. When we host Coil for you, the terms of that arrangement govern the data in your instance, not this page.
What the website collects
Two forms, and nothing else:
- The beta waitlist. Your name, firm, firm size, email, an optional phone number, how you would like to run Coil, and anything you type in the free-text box.
- The download form. Your name, firm, firm size, email, phone and an optional note about what else your firm might need. Your install key is derived from your email address.
Both forms record the page they were submitted from, a timestamp, and your IP address. The IP address is used for rate limiting and spam scoring, not for profiling.
Install key activation
The first time a self-hosted copy of Coil starts, it sends us the install key, the email it was issued to, the firm name you entered, the address you are running Coil at and the version number, so we can confirm the key is valid. That is one request, at first run. Coil does not check in again, and it never sends us anything about your matters, clients, documents, invoices or trust accounts.
Analytics
This site runs no analytics, no advertising pixels and no third-party trackers, and it sets no cookies of its own. If that changes, this section changes with it.
Spam protection
Form submissions are scored for spam before they are delivered. If Cloudflare Turnstile is enabled on a form, your browser exchanges a token with Cloudflare when the form loads, subject to Cloudflare's own terms.
Where it goes
Submissions are emailed to us and recorded in a spreadsheet we control. Install keys and activations are written to a file on our own server. We do not sell anything collected here, and we do not share it with anyone outside the team that builds Coil.
How long it is kept
Waitlist and download records are kept while there is a live reason to hold them: an open waitlist place, an active install, or a conversation in progress. Ask and we will delete yours. Deleting your record does not disable a copy of Coil you are already running, because the key is derived rather than stored.
What we will not do
We will not add you to a newsletter or a drip sequence from either form. We will reply to what you sent, and follow up once about the install if you downloaded Coil.
Your choices
Email [email protected] to see what we hold about you, correct it, or have it deleted. There is no account to close, because this site does not create one.
Changes
Material changes will be dated at the top of this page. The website is static, so its history is also visible in the repository the site is built from.
